Annual Solar Maintenance Checklist for Homeowners

Solar systems need very little maintenance, but a thorough check once a year can prevent small issues from becoming expensive problems. Here's a checklist you can share with your installer or technician.

1. Panels

  • Check for cracks, chips or broken glass
  • Look for discolouration, burn marks or bubbles
  • Check for hot spots (a thermal camera helps)
  • Clean thoroughly and check for stubborn stains

2. Mounting structure

  • Check for rust, especially at joints and bolts
  • Tighten loose bolts and clamps
  • Check anchoring and pedestals for cracks
  • Ensure the structure is still level and aligned

3. Cables and connectors

  • Inspect DC cables for damage, cuts or rodent bites
  • Check MC4 connectors for heating, melting or loose fitting
  • Ensure cables are secured in conduits and not lying on the roof
  • Check cable entry points into buildings for proper sealing

4. Inverter

  • Check the display or app for error history
  • Clean air vents and heat sinks of dust
  • Ensure the inverter area is shaded and ventilated
  • Check firmware updates if recommended by the manufacturer

5. ACDB and DCDB

  • Inspect for burn marks or a burning smell
  • Check fuses, MCBs and surge protection devices
  • Ensure boxes are closed and weatherproof
  • Tighten terminals where needed (by a qualified technician only)

6. Earthing and lightning protection

  • Measure earth resistance values and compare with previous readings
  • Check earth pit covers and connections
  • Inspect the lightning arrester and its down conductor

7. Generation review

  • Compare this year's generation with last year's for the same months
  • Investigate any significant drops

8. Batteries (if hybrid or off-grid)

  • Check battery health and connections
  • For lead-acid batteries, check electrolyte levels and top up with distilled water
  • Ensure the battery area is ventilated and clean

9. Roof condition

  • Check for any waterproofing damage around structure footings
  • Make sure drains are clear

Best time for the annual check

Just before the monsoon is ideal, so the system is ready for storms and heavy rain.

The bottom line

A yearly professional check keeps your solar system safe, efficient and protected โ€” and helps your warranties stay valid.
