The first step towards the residential rooftop solar subsidy is registering on the national portal for PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. Here's a simple walkthrough.

Before you start
Keep these ready:
- Latest electricity bill (consumer/account number)
- Mobile number with you for OTPs
- Email ID
- Aadhaar details
Step 1: Visit the official portal
Go to the official website: pmsuryaghar.gov.in. Be careful of look-alike websites — use only the official government portal or its official app.
Step 2: Register as a consumer
- Choose your state (Karnataka)
- Select your electricity distribution company (for example, GESCOM for the Kalaburagi region)
- Enter your electricity consumer number
- Enter your mobile number and email
- Verify with OTP
Step 3: Log in and fill the application
After registration, log in with your consumer number and mobile number. Fill in details such as:
- Applicant name (as per electricity bill)
- Address
- Proposed solar capacity (kW)
- Other information requested
Step 4: Submit for feasibility
Submit the application. Your ESCOM will review it and grant feasibility approval if technical conditions are met.
Step 5: Choose a registered vendor
After approval, select a registered vendor for your ESCOM to install the system. The vendor must use approved DCR panels.
Step 6: Installation and documentation
Once installed, the vendor helps upload plant details, photos and documents, and you apply for the net meter through the portal.
Step 7: Inspection and commissioning
The ESCOM installs the net meter and inspects the system. A commissioning certificate is generated after successful inspection.
Step 8: Bank details for subsidy
Submit your bank account details and a cancelled cheque on the portal. The subsidy is released to your account after verification.
